We expected stiffer penalties for gas flare in PIA –Environmentalist

Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), an environmental advocacy group on Friday said the group expected stiffer penalties for gas flare in the recently signed Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

 

 

Rev Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director, HOMEF in a reaction to the President’s assent to the bill , observed that the new law lacked adequate protection for the ecosystem as it encouraged paltry fines for gas flares.

 

He noted that the group had always advocated stiff sanctions for emitting gas and a fine that is equal to the economic value of the flared gas, a development that would compel operators to end the practice..

Rev. Samuel Ayadi, Coordinator of ARFAN in the Niger Delta who made the commendation while reacting to the President’s assent to the PIB noted that the new law holds promises for the Niger Delta region.

 

 

Sen. Dickson says petition against him frivolous

Sen. Seriake Dickson has described the allegations contained in the petition over which he was questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday as “frivolous’’.

Dickson said in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Fidelis Soriwei, on Wednesday, that the anti-graft agency had questioned and allowed him to return home on self recognition.

The senator representing Bayelsa West, was alleged to have breached asset declaration laws and diverted funds for flood response, to the tune of N17.5 billion during his tenure as governor of the state.

Media-Focused NGO charges journalists on data usage

An NGO, Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI), on Wednesday, charged journalists on the use of data in reporting, especially on environmental issues.

Mr Ikechukwu Ahaka, the Programme Officer, MAJI, made the call while speaking at a capacity building workshop on using data participatory media tools for environmental reporting for Yenagoa-based journalists.

 

He said that under the Data Casting Biodiversity (DATACAB) project funded by the French Embassy, the NGO had recruited and trained volunteers.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) on Sunday said it has cumulatively created  7,913 entrepreneurs in its youth enterprise development programme for Niger Delta youths from 2003 till date.

Bayelsa Govt appeals for revalidation of Atala Marginal fields OML 46 licence

Indications have emerged that emerged that the government of Bayelsa has not given up on the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 46 licence it lost to revocation by Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

 

 

   

Bayelsa Oil Company had reapplied for the licence during the last bidding by DPR but the bid turned out unsuccessful.

 

 

Tthe OML 46 asset held by Bayelsa government located within onshore swamps in Bayelsa was won in 2013 through a bidding process conducted by the DPR.

 

Bayelsa Govt laments revocation of Atala Marginal fields, seeks revalidation

The Bayelsa government on Wednesday said it remained interested in reinstatement of the Atala Marginal oil fields licence revoked by the Department of Petroleum Resources on April 6, 2020.

 

 

Bayelsa Oil Company had reapplied for the licence during the last bidding by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) but the bid turned out unsuccessful.

 

 

It will be recalled that the OML 46 asset held by Bayelsa government located within onshore swamps in Bayelsa was won in 2013 through a bidding process conducted by the DPR.

 

 

Meanwhile, the DPR on April 6, 2020 announced the revocation of 11 of the 13 marginal fields licenses it issued to indigenous oil firms to build capacity and promote Nigerians’ participation in the oil sector.
