Blue Economy Newsmagazine Honours Capt. Mbokazi on Women in Maritime Day

Blue Economy Newsmagazine has honoured South African maritime professional, Makhosi Mbokazi, for her groundbreaking contributions to Africa’s maritime industry as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) marked the 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime.

The recognition coincided with the IMO’s annual hybrid event held in London on May 18 under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence.”

Speaking in Port Harcourt, publisher of Blue Economy Newsmagazine and Convener of the Africa Blue Economy Roundtable, Piriye Kiyaramo, described Capt. Mbokazi as a trailblazer whose achievements demonstrate the impact of inclusive maritime policies.

Kiyaramo noted that Mbokazi became the first African woman to serve as Chief Officer aboard a 12,398 GRT drill ship in 2018 and also emerged as South Africa’s first female Surf Pilot-Engineer.

According to him, her accomplishments remain significant in a sector where women account for less than two per cent of seafarers globally and continue to face structural barriers.

He said Mbokazi’s career provides a model for maritime academies, shipping firms and regulators seeking to promote greater inclusion and competitiveness within the industry.

Kiyaramo also highlighted her academic and professional credentials, including qualifications in Marine Science and Maritime Studies from the Durban University of Technology, as well as her role as founder of Marine Crew Welfare, a digital platform supporting seafarers across Africa.

The magazine also celebrated Momoko Kitada, who is expected to receive the 2026 IMO Gender Equality Award and unveil a handbook on gender mainstreaming during the event.

In addition, Kiyaramo commended Sean F. Petoors for promoting Mbokazi’s achievements globally and advancing blue and green economy initiatives across Southern Africa.

The International Day for Women in Maritime, established by the International Maritime Organization, is observed annually on May 18 to encourage the recruitment, retention and empowerment of women in

the maritime sector.
