NIMASA donates relief materials to 2018 flood victims in Bayelsa

Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) on Thursday donated relief materials to victims of the 2018 flood disaster that submerged parts of the state and displaced about 150,000 residents.

Dr Dakuku Peterside, Director-General of NIMASA said that the agency made the intervention to assist the rehabilitation of the people impacted by the flood disaster.

Peterside who was represented by Mr Kelvin Ogbuanu, Assistant Director , Procurement at NIMASA presented the materials to the Director-General of Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency , Major Zedekiah Isu (Rtd) in Yenagoa.




The truckload of items included mattresses, beddings, toiletries, detergents, bottled water and assorted food items.

Ogbuanu urged the emergency agency to ensure that the materials were given to the victims who are in its records.

He said that NIMASA under the leadership of Peterside had developed a Corporate Social Responsibility' policy by setting up a committee to work out a template for implementation.

He said that NIMASA has intervened in 20 states affected by the 2018 flood disaster

Responding, Isu assured that the items will be distributed judiciously amongst flood victims across the eight local government areas.

He applauded NIMASA for identifying with the victims and urged the agency to prepare to assist the state ahead the projected flood in 2019.

It would be recall that Bayelsa government opened internally displaced persons camps across the eight local government areas in the state where the 150,000 victims were kept for two months until the camps were closed in November 2018.
