A Political Pressure
Group in the Edo Chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC), the Edo
People's Movement (EPM) has vowed to resist all attempt by any individual to
hijack and destroy the party.
The Group who met in Benin on Saturday said they were committed
and resolute in rescuing and salvaging the party in the State from imminent
collapse.
Mr Henry Idahagbon, the immediate past Attorney General of the
State, who was a co convener of the meeting said that the essence of the
gathering was to chat a way forward on how to rescue the party from what he
called imminent collapse under the present party leadership and government in
the State.
He also said that the Group want the party to retain its pride
of place and remain formidable like it was during the administration of
immediate past governor Adams Oshiomole.
He noted that the party leaders in the State have been alienated
by the present leadership and government in the State which accounted for the
abysmal failure of the party in the the February and March general elections.
He also said that the party leaders were not satisfied
with the performance of Gov Godwin Obaseki, as he had failed to fulfil any of
his electoral promises.
According to him "Obaseki promised 200,000 jobs, but I can
tell you authoritatively he has not even created a thousand.
" According to recent data from the bureau of statistics,
there is 26 per cent unemployment rate in Edo", he said.
He also said that both the Benin Industrial Park and the
Gelegele Seaport had died a natural death as they had project neither took off.
Similarly, Mr Samson Osagie, Hon Samson R Osagie, former
Minority Whip,House of Representatives, who was a co-convener in his remarks
said "When you elect a government in a democracy, it's not because
those elected are better than those who elected them.
"The purpose a political party serves to bring about
government is to guide the government to achieve service delivery for the
society, not to turn against the party members and then capitalize on the
vulnerability of the public.
"My dear party men and women, today we have the
biggest misfortune in our political history in Edo State to have elected a man
who believes he is the most intelligent and knowledgeable person than everyone
else in Edo state including the man who sponsored him.
According to him, the present administration in the State
demonises the party that and romances with the with the opposition.
He also said that the administration does not find party members
good enough to handle important government assignments and imports his friends
from US, Canada, Lagos and other places to pilfer the economy of the
state.
This action he said has killed the morale of every party member
thereby making them loose faith in the party they formed.
He said that it was against this background that the Group have
considered it important to take their destiny in their own hands.
"Our mission is to rescue our party and State from
the Governor and we will not shy from doing so.
"Since we agreed that we made a mistake the first
time, the time to correct that mistake is now", he concluded.
Meanwhile some APC party leaders from across the three
Senatorial district who spoke at the meeting were unanimous on the urgent need
to rescue the party from destruction and collapse.
Meanwhile when contacted, Chief Anselm Ojezua, the Edo APC
chairman, said that the Group was entitled to their opinion, adding that the
Group's position was not that of the party in the State
