In a bid to shore up its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), the
Esan North East Local Government Council has embarked on the construction of a
livestock market and abattoir in Uromi, the Council headquarters of the Local
Government Area.
Mr Austin Okoibhole, Chairman of the council disclosed this in an
interview in Benin on Saturday.
Okoibhole said that the project which would be completed within
the month would also help track inflow of flocks into the council area.
He explained that the Council under his leadership had decided
to look at areas to shore up its IGR since the Council Area was basically a
commercial town.
He disclosed that though the IGR from the Council had increased
from the about N6 million generated monthly before he took over office to about
N9 million monthly, there was still need to improve on the IGR in order to be
give the people dividend of democracy.
He disclosed that the project which had reached 96 per cent
completion would be completed and operational within the month.
He also explained that the council also has plans to build
another commodity market as well as a spare part and mechanics village which
would serve as a one stop shop to profile people for daily business
transaction.
While disclosing that the land for the project was already
readily available, he however said that the major challenge before the council
was the dearth of funds.
According to him, "But with political will under two years
the project would be ready".
The Council boss further disclosed that plans have been
concluded to revamp the four existing moribund skill acquisition centre in the
local give council area.
He said that when functional the skill acquisition centre would
not only have provided employment for some persons, but would also generate
revenue for the council.
Okoibhole who also spoke on insecurity in the country said that
the council was trying to deal with the issue of insecurity in the best
possible ways.
He however said that the council would reactivate the local
vigilante group to harmonise with the Police to ensure adequate security for
the people of the local government.
