Former Trade Union
Congress (TUC) President, Mr Peter Esele on Sunday distributed foodstuffs and
undisclosed cash to 600 women in Ohordua near Ubiaja in Esan South-East Local
Government Area of Edo.
Speaking on the
occasion, Esele noted that the burden of raising families was an
excruciating pain in the absence their breadwinners.
He said the
distribution of the items and cash was a demonstration of his willingness to
identify with the widows and in share their burden in the spirit of the
Yuletide.
He explained that
women’s empowerment had become an annual event coupled with award of bursaries
to students of tertiary institutions.
Esele noted that the
beneficiaries can venture into businesses of their choice and become
self-reliant.
The former TUC
president further disclosed his plan to float a non-government organisation in
2019 aimed at assisting widows with revolving loans to the widows.
He added that
statistics of all widows in the Local Government Area would be collated to
enable many of them to access the loan.
In his remarks, Mr
Victor Emuagbon, the Chairman, Esan North East Local Government Council urged
the widows to form a cooperative societies to enable them access the council’s
loan scheme.
Some of the
beneficiaries thanked and prayed for the former TUC president while urging
other prominent and privileged sons and daughters of the area to emulate his
good gesture.
Mrs Mabel Saturday
said she didn’t believe it when some persons informed her of the intention of
the donor, adding that good people still abound in the community.
Another beneficary,
Mrs Dora Omozokpai, lauded the gesture of the donor, describing him as a rare
gem.
Contributing, Mrs
Philomena Eboje said she was elated by the fact that the local government still
had men of goodwill who cared for the widows.
The beneficiaries cut
across political divides and across seven communities including Ologua/Ohordua,
Uriwa, Ibhiedu, Orekhebhie, Ozen, Eguare and Uokhuen.
