World Physiotherapy Day: Expert stresses need for increased physical activities

Mr Olugbenga Popoola, the Head of Department of Physiotherapy, Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa, has stressed the need for increased physical activities for healthy living.

Popoola said this during an interview session to commemorate the 2017 World Physiotherapy Day on Friday in Yenagoa.

He said the day was to recognise the role of physiotherapists to their patients and to communities, with “Physical Activity for Life” as its theme for this year.

The head of department, who noted that physiotherapists played important roles in healthy living, especially in ageing, said “including physical activities in one’s lifestyle can make the bones stronger.

“As we celebrate this year’s World Physiotherapy Day, let us remember the common sayings that what you don’t use, you lose, and as you lay your bed, so you will lie on it.

“Therefore, engage your body actively; do not take taxi or your car when you can take a walk; Do not take a drop when you can take a taxi.

“Make physical activity a lifestyle, and your body will be there for you, strong, even in old age.

“Some physiotherapy services are available and can be accessed in health facilities.”

He, therefore, urged Bayelsa residents and Nigerians in general to take advantage of such facilities to engage their body for healthy living.
