Nigeria's unity is not negotiable"- Bayelsa Monarch


King Joshua Igbugbugburu, the 80 year old Traditional Ruler of Bomo Clan in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa has said unity of Nigeria is sacrosanct


Igbugbugburu told those agitating for secession of some parts of the country from Nigeria to stop as the nation's unity is not negotiable.


Igbugburu, who has ruled for 58 years as the Ibenanaowei of Bomo clan said the agitations of those clamouring for secession may have arose from issue of exclusion.


He said the agitation should be directed at political leaders who have failed to deliver dividends of democracy and not threaten the unity of the nation.





Igbugburu said on Friday during a call on him at his Palace Annexe in Yenagoa by the Chairman and members of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe led by Professor, Olanipekun Edward. 


Igbugburu, who declined to comment on the clamour by some State Governors for restructuring.


"I have been on the throne for 58 years and I don't want the country to break.


“The clamour for secession is not the problem. The problem is leadership. I want the Unity of the Country. If we have good leadership, there would not be problem.

“If you look at the State and local Governments, the people are crying over salaries and others.


"‎In unity we should stand and divided we fall. All I want is unity and good governance. All I want is a united Nigeria. The North should not drive the Ibos and the Ibos should not drive the Hausas. All we want is unity" he said.


The monarch noted that the recent calls for restructuring said  the calls are personal, described the calls by governors for restructuring as "highly political‎"


He also called on the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic,Ekeowe and the students of the Institution to pray for the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari.


He urged the Federal Government to quickly award contract for the construction of road from the Bayelsa capital to the Institution for effective development of the riverine area.


Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institution, Edward told the monarch that the visit was to have a first hand view of the institution as the 3rd Governing Council inaugurated on the 11th of May,2017.



He commended the monarch for his assistance during the assessment tour of the Institution and sought his assistance at prevailing on the Federal Government to assist the institution with access road.
