Pipeline vandals kill one in reprisal attack following arrest of 3 gang members in Bayelsa



Suspected oil thieves on Wednesday attacked Korokorosei Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa leaving one dead , Police aut hourities have said.

Mr Asinim, Butswat, Spokesman for Bayelsa Police Command confirmed the development on Friday in Yenagoa.

He said the attack was sequel to the arrest of three of the gang members of the hoodlums by the combined team of the JointTask Force and the men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).






The three suspects were arrested over their alleged involvement in the December, 2016 attack on the Tebidaba trunk line operated by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC).



Sources in the area said the vandals, who were armed and allegedly attacked the Korokorsei community in the early hours of Wednesday Morning, shooting to death a youth identified simply as Erelayefa.

The deceased had accosted the oil thieves.

Also shot and critically injured were two school pupils from the Community Primary School.

It was gathered that the members of the Oil and Gas Committee in the Southern Ijaw area were also attacked.

The home of the Coordinator of the Oil and Gas Task Force and three others were set ablaze over their involvement in the arrest of their colleagues.

“Most of indigenes in the community, including the Youth leadership, agreed and promised to assist because of the community safety and reputation.

"The bad boys came again and started beating up most of those suspected to have been working with security agents.

"The Oil and Gas committee members quickly passed the information to JTF, Police and others and they deployed their personnel to the community. The boys escaped.

“On Wednesday, the boys invaded the town again and started shooting. One of the youths in the area engaged them .He was shot dead. Two school pupil sustained gun shot on the leg and on the neck” a community source said.

But,it was said it was members of the Oil and Gas Task Force in the area that clashed with fellow community members who were not members of the Task Force.The deceased was was shot and killed by a Task Force member. And later,almost all the houses of members of the Task Force in the community were burnt down;including that of the leader of the Task Force in the community.
