Bayelsa Govt frowns at disobedience to court verdicts by oil firms





Bayelsa government on Friday expressed concerns and displeasure with oil firms for flouting court orders and disobeying court judgments on oil spill cases.

The government noted that disregard to court rulings was an invitation to anarchy and called on oil films operating in the state to embrace the rule of law.

Mr. Felix Bonny Ayah, Special Adviser to the governor on Oil & Gas, stated this while mediating in a peace meeting between Onyoma community in Southern Ijaw and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in his office.




Bayelsa government in January 2016 sued Nigeria Agip Oil Company seeking N1.6 trillion naira  damages for pollution caused by an oil spill in Brass area of the state in November 2013.  

He noted that SPDC has reneged its corporate social responsibilities to maintain peace in their operations, negating the state  government’s effort to strengthened the existing peace for smoothen operations by oil firms

 Ayah, explained that after going true the outcome of the court verdict at his disposal authenticating Anyamawari family as certified owners of the land, it is incumbent on SPDC to recognize and treat them as such.

He advised the Anyamawari family to channel all relevant documents to the appropriate quarters of the company for prompt action and payments of all outstanding obligations without further delay.

Responding, the Community Relations Officer of SPDC, maintained that the oil firm had laid down procedures in resolving issues with communities where it operates urging the community to follow same.

The SPDC official enjoined them to forwards all documents through the legal departments to the company for appropriate actions.
