Delta State University matriculates 9,498



The Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka has matriculated a total of 9,498 students in its 2025/2026 academic calendar.


The matriculation oath was administered to the freshers on Saturday in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state.


Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Samuel Asagba, the Vice Chancellor of DELSU said that the students were among the tens of thousands of candidates who applied for admission into the university.


"I congratulate you for not only attaining another milestone in your academic pursuit, but for successfully scaling through the difficult hurdles of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Post University Matriculation Screening exercise," he said.


Recall that this is the second matriculation exercise Prof. Asagba is presiding over since his assumption of office on Dec. 2, 2024 as the 8th substantive vice chancellor of the university.


Asagba said that the university had distinguished itself as one of the centers of academic excellence, adding that it has become an attraction for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.


He attributed the rush for admission into the university to the institution's track records of maintaining smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar over the years.


Asagba disclosed that the university currently had 17 faculties with 109 academic programmes, in addition to one Institute of Education and Business School.


The vice chancellor said that the institution's management was setting machinery in motion to introduce more robust programmes to cater for the academic needs of this generation.


"Matriculation ceremony is a requirement in higher institutions and the oath is an initiation into the intellectual community because it confers on you, full rights of studentship.


"It is universal academic tradition for any would-be scholar in the pursuit of higher education. Today, as you subscribe to the rite of this landmark academic tradition, you will become formally admitted into DELSU," he said.


Asagba said that the university would have admit more than the current number of students to address the yearnings of youth seeking admission.


He, however, said that admission into universities across Nigeria was moderated by the National University Commission in conjunction with the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board.


The vice chancellor said that the institution had through it's cardinal objectives, continued to improve on capacity building as well as intellectual and manpower development in different fields of human endeavours over the years.


Asagba urged the students to be of good behavior and refrained from activities that could endanger their intellectualism.


He also urged the students to eschew examination malpractice, indecent dressing and others, that were now becoming norms among the undergraduates.


Asagba further urged the students to shun secret cult, stressing that cultism remain banned in the campus.


"I urge you to shun all forms of vices that will jeopadise the successful completion of your studies and the attainment of you life dream.


"Peace is paramount to meaningful academic pursuit and it is on this premise that DELSU will continue to wage war against the nefarious activities of secret cults in the campus," he said.


The vice chancellor warned that anyone caught indulged in cult-related activities would be expelled from the university.


He, however, thanked the Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta for the giant strides he had taken in the overall development of the university.


One of the matriculating students, Miss Amos Fejiro expressed joy and pledged t

o justified the confidence reposed on her.
