Child right advocacy group kicks against marriage of 4 year old girl to a 54 year old man In Bayelsa

A Child rights advocacy group in Bayelsa , DO Foundation on Thursday kicked against the Dec 26 traditional marriage between a four years old ‘bride’ and a 54 year old man at Akeddei community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.

DO Foundation, in a statement availed to reporters in Yenagoa, described the marriage as illegal, criminal and child marriage which is against the constitution and the Child Rights Act.

MOSIEND attributes Diri’s re-election to his inclusive leadership style

The Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND) has attributed the re-election victory of Gov Douye Diri of Bayelsa to his unique inclusive leadership style which has endeared him to the electorate.


MOSIEND, a pan Ijaw socio-cultural movement in the Niger Delta stated this in a congratulatory message signed by its President, Amb. Kennedy Tonjo West on Saturday.

Rivers Crisis: Ijaw National Congress urges Tinubu to call Wike to order

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to caution the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike over plans to remove the state Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, from office.



The INC, in a statement by its President, Prof Benjamin Okaba, wondered why Wike has been resolute in the plot to remove Fubara from office in spite of the interventions by the President and other stakeholders.



The INC  also criticised the security agencies for their support for the Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the state lawmakers loyal to the FCT Minster.


Fishermen list oil pollution, trawlers incursion, harmful fishing methods as obstacles Traditional fishermen operating in creeks, rivers and Atlantic coastline of Bayelsa have listed oil pollution, incursion by industrial fishing trawlers and unnatural fishing methods as obstacles to their vocation. The fishermen identified the challenges at a capacity building workshop by Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). The fishermen identified the obstacles at a brainstorming session facilitated by Dr Ogechi Cookey, Research and Publications Lead at HOMEF adding that they were responsible for dwindle catch by fishermen across the Niger Delta region. According to them inɗustrial fishing trawlers restricted by law from operating near the coastline ofteñ encroach to ‘sweep’ the waterways by overfishing and catchinɠ fingerlings that ought to grow to replenish the fish stock. They also lamented that some fishermen use some local leaves and mix them with chemicals to boost catch to the detriment of the food chain. Chief Washinton Odoyibo, a shierman, farmer and community leader in Ikarama, Yenagoa LGA noted that oil exploration and associated spills have wiped out fish species and made the waters toxic to support fishing. He noted that during oil spill incidents, the booms used to trap crude from spreading obstruct navigation by fishing boats and regretted the oil firms often abandon the booms even after clean up. Also Chief Mrs Ayibakuro Warder, a community leader in Ikarama noted that prolonged exposure to crude and inhaling the toxic fumes has increased the prevalence of athsmæ and other respiratory ailments. “The frequent spills in Ikarama has led to diagnosis of many new ænd strange ailments previously not common, and women are worst hit because they stay longer in the farms and get exposed to crude. “The report by Bayelsa Oil and Environmental Commision found higher than normal levels of heavy metals in breast milk of breast feeding mothers. “High rate of miscarriages amongst women of reproductive ages in oil communities was also reported by the study,” Warder said. In his welcome remarks, Chief Alagoa Morris, a renowned Environmentalist commended HOMEF for building the capacity of fishermen to defend their environmental and human rights. Morris, who is also Technical Adviser on Environment to Bayelsa Governor urged the fishermen to make contributions that will help policy makers to formulate policies to improve fisheries. Dr Piriye Kiyaromo, Senior Special Adviser on Tourism to Bayelsa Governor in his goodwill message noted that there was a link between fishing and tourism. He said tourists often accompany fishermen on fishing expeditions even as they also add to the culinary experience of tourists who crave for local dishes. Kiyaramo noted that the proposed State Ministry of Blue Economy in Bayelsa would take care of the concerns and challenges faced by fishermen who for a significant segment of the blue economy.

Expert advocates revival of idle wells to boost oil output to meet OPEC quota


Dr Victor Ekpenyong, an oil industry expert, says the country should leverage on existing oil reserves to boost oil production to earn more to meet revenue shortfalls.


Ekpenyong, Chief Executive of Kenyon International West Africa Ltd., a Well Control Services firm, made the call during an interactive session with journalists in Yenagoa on the state of the oil industry.

Jonathan can't 'hijack' Bayelsa's ministerial slot says APC Campaign Council


The Bayelsa Chapter of the Tinubu/Shettima  Independent Campaign Council (ICC) on Sunday allayed fears of impending hijack of Bayelsa's ministeriæl slot by non All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful.


The support group assured members of the APC in the state that former President Goodluck Jonathan will not be allowed to nominate the Bayelsa's ministerial slot.


The ICC said it was inconceivable for Jonathan, who is one of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to nominate the state's representative in the incoming cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.


Police reunites trafficked children abandoned in Yenagoa with family.


The Police in Bayelsa on Sunday said two children purportedly abandoned by an unknown child trafficker have been reunited with their family.


SP Asinim Butswat, Police Public Relations Officer in Bayelsa saiid that the abandoned children of same parents were brought to the Police by a 'Good Samaritan'.


Butswat said that investigations were underway to trace and apprehend the suspected tafficker who allegedly brought the children from Rivers to Bayelsa and abandoned them.

Cargo boat capsizes in Bayelsa, passengers swim to safety

A boat mishap involving a cargo and passenger boat MV Tari occured along the Yenagoa-Nembe-Brasss waterways.



The ill-fated boat capsizes near Okoroma in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa and the passengers on board swimmer to safety whilst the cargo remained submerged.


Mr Tari Dikuma, Assistant Secretary of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Okpoama unit, told our correspondent  that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.

Buhari applauds, reappoints Idris Musa as NOSDRA Director-General

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reappointment of Mr Idris Musa as Director-General of the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) following sterling performænce in the past four years.


The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by Olusegun Shogbola, Media Aide to Minister of Environment Mohammed Abdullahi on behalf of the Minister.

INEC distributes sensitive election materials for State Assembly Elections in Bayelsa

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bayelsa on Thursday distributed materials for State Assembly Election slated for March 18.


The sensitive materials were sorted out and dispatched at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yenagoa to the eight local government area that make up the 24 constituencies in the state.


The distribution of materials was witnessed by Party agents and other stakeholders, whilest journalists were not allowed into the premises to witness first hand, the distribution process.

Shell resumes oil export from Bonny Oil Export Terminal

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) on Wednesday announced resumption of oil exports from the Bonny Crude Oil Export Terminal.


The resumption of oil exports from the facility follows the lifting of 'Force Majeure' on oil exports due to a blast on a pipeline feeding the terminal on March 3.

Naira Redesign: Bayelsa Govt urges CBN to ameliorate sufferings

The Bayelsa Government on Saturday called on the the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to respect the judgment of the Supreme Court and ease the hardships of citizens caused by the new Naira policy.


The government also appealed for calm amidst the challenges faced by Nigerians following the Naira redesign and cashless policy introduced by the CBN.


The government made the call in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Chief Ayibaina Duba, following protest by residents of the state over the policy.

Explosion at TNP pipeline in Rivers traced to oil theft, Shell regrets loss of lives

he Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) says investigation into Friday’s explosion at the Rumuekpe section of Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Rivers, shows the blast was caused by activities of oil thieves.


 


SPDC in an update statement on Sunday, noted that a joint investigation by representatives of regulators, host communities, operator and state Ministry of Environment on Saturday found a breach on the TNP.


 

Explosion at Shell's TNP pipeline in Rivers kills 12

At least 12 persons died on Friday following an explosion at the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Rumuekpe, Rivers.


Police Spokesman in Rivers, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said that rescue efforts were underway.


The TNP, operated by Shell, evacuates crude from its oil fields to the Bonny Crude Oil Export Terminal.

Shortage of ballot papers: Resilient voters protest forces INEC to shift election in Yenagoa LGA to Sunday


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Yenagoa, which held across the nation on Saturday to Sunday.


INEC announced the postponement in a statement issued Saturday night and signed by Mr Wilfred Ifoga, Head of Voter Education and Publicity.


The affected Registration Areas are, Epie I and Epie III, Gbarain II and Okordia.

Oloibiri Museum Project: President Buhari Tasks Contractors, Host Communities On Delivery.

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the major contractors handling the Oloibiri Museum and Research Centre as well as the Local Content Conference Hotel to deliver both projects according to specifications and timelines meant for their completion.


To this end, he directed Julius Berger, the Contractors handling the Oloibiri Museum and MegaStar Technical and Construction Company Limited in charge of the NCDMB Conference Hotel to carry their host communities along in executing the projects.


President Buhari gave the directives, on Tuesday, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Museum and Research Centre at Otuabagi in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.


Bayelsa Education Trust Fund equips 12 Schools with computers, kits for coding and robotics

Dr Gentle Emelah, Commissioner for Education in Bayelsa , who presented the items to benefitting school principals, reiterated the commitment of the state government to providing quality education in all parts of the state.

Mr Sam Enudi, a New York based Nigerian says his book “Work in Progress” provided a multidimensional approach to solving everyday life struggles.


Enudi said in an interview on Thursday that his interest in seeking a way out of troubles and life's challenges culminated into writing the book.


The Bayelsa Government on Wednesday dissociated itself from a list of 10 state governments opposing the naira redesign policy and restated its support to the Federal Government on the exercise.

The government in a statement issued in Yenagoa, demanded apology from a group of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of the Civil Society Organisations Central Coordinating Council.

The statement distancing Bayelsa from opposing the new policy was signed by Mr Ayibaina Duba, Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy.

So, he headed for a nearby ATM centre for some cash withdrawal where unknown to him, a predator ATM scammer was lurking in the background.

“I had an unfortunate experience trying to get cash at a Zenith Bank Branch at Amarata in Yenagoa.

“That day was a sad day for me as I was defrauded. All my savings in the bank was cleared by one dubious character.

Ward Congress: Bayelsa APC heads to Appeal court, says candidate not disqualified.

The Bayelsa chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says the decision of Bayelsa State High Court on a suit challenging the party's congress did not disqualify its candidates in the forthcoming polls.


The APC in Bayelsa in a statement issued on Saturday by Mr Emmanuel Ayakpo, Director of Administration said reports that the court had disqualified its candidates were false and misleading.


The statement said the falsehood and misrepresentation were the handiwork of rival political parties to distract APC from its focus of sweeping the 2023 polls in Bayelsa.
