Bayelsa Health Insurance scheme enrolment hits 80,000 -Executive Secretary

Dr Zuoboemi Agadah, executive Secretary, Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme has registered over 80,000 public sector enrolees less than one year after it commenced operations.

Bayelsa government started a health insurance scheme for its workforce in June 2017 with a plan to extend the scheme to cover the informal sector in due course.

Agadah gave the figures on Wednesday in Yenagoa while signing a Memorandum of Understanding with a Health Maintenance Organisation, United Healthcare International for technical support for the scheme.

He said that the enrolment was ongoing as beneficiaries of the scheme were sensitizing people to embrace the scheme adding that the feedback from the registration desk was encouraging.

He said that despite the growing number of enrolees that acess health services under the scheme, it has met its financial obligations in payment of capitation and fees to healthcare providers.

According to him, going by the feedback from enrolees and other stakeholders in the health sector, the scheme is doing well.

The Executive Secretary attributed the success so far recorded to adoption of the template already laid down by the National Health Insurance Scheme run by the Federal Government.

He said that the Bayelsa Health Insurance scheme was also collaborating with other states where similar schemes were running smoothly to overcome teething problems of the scheme for the benefit of all stakeholders.

The scheme he said was able to overcome problems at the initial stages of implementation through an effective Quality Assurance and Compliance Management System put in place.

Agadah applauded United Healthcare International for their expertise and support to the scheme from inception in June 2017 resulting to the high standards in the overall implementation of the scheme.

He said that the scheme has made quality healthcare affordable available to enrolees who paid just 10 per cent of the cost of drugs in addition to monthly premiums paid by civil servants.

He commended Gov Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa for establishing the scheme which has made health services affordable and available to the citizenry adding that plans have reached advanced states to cover the private sector.

In his response, Dr kazeem Mustapha, Executive Director, United Healthcare noted that the zeal and commitment of the managers of the Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme was commendable.

He said that the quick impact and of the scheme being celebrated was a direct result of the determination of the Bayelsa government to improving the health status of the citizenry.

He assured the state government that the board of the scheme would justify the confidence adding that extending the scheme to the informal sector would bring more accolades.
