At least 40 detained criminals break and escape from Police detention facility in Yenagoa

At least 40 suspected armed robbers and cultists detained in the custody of the Special Anti Robbery Squad cell (SARS) on Tuesday broke free from the detention and escaped into the society.

A Policeman attached to the SARS who was drafted to cordon off the facility said that they were still taking stock of the number of inmates that escaped.

"The cell holds more than 50 suspects but it is empty so it is difficult to give an accurate number untill they check the records, but we hear that 42 criminals were being detained," the Policeman said.

The Bayelsa Commisioner of Police Mr Asuquo Amba was sighted at the SARS office along Road Safety road in Yenagoa with senior police officers inspecting the detention facility which breached the security of the public.

The area had been cordoned off by armed policemen while nobody was allowed access.

Mr Asinin Butwat , a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Spokesman for Bayelsa Police Command said he had sketchy details as the incident was being investigated.

He promised to provide further details as soon as they are available.

The suspects broke through the back section of the cell and scaled into the Yenagoa LGA premises.

A police source said that one of the escapee suspects has been re-arrested while there is heavy search for others, while members of the public called for caution as security agencies were fond of arresting innocent people to save face

It was also gathered that it was the vigillance of security personnel at the Yenagoa LGA office behind the cell  alerted the officers of SARS at the front before they discovered that the facility was empty and subsequently raised the alarm.
